It was too early for drinking, the weather was humid

And hypnotic. The sky on fire added to our burden.

So I walked down Mbarakom’s grassy bank to a jetty

That terminated in a small thatch-roofed pavilion.

I could see the entire dark mangrove bank,

Its polished surface occasionally disturbed by

An excited fish or another prowling crocodile.

The full moon rising behind it created a garish glow

That morphed the whole scene into a painting

You could find in an art gallery in Las Vegas or

Any other sin city in the Occident or the Orient.
